The Dog Licensing Bylaw requires all dogs to be licensed.

Where does the money go that is collected from licensing fees?
All funding collected from licensing fees goes to the running of the Delta Community Animal Shelter:

  • to re-unite dogs with owners
  • to care for Delta's homeless animals
  • to service the community for animal related concerns

Help Your Dog Find Its Way Home
A dog license helps protect your pet by providing an easy-to-identify dog tag and registration with the Delta Community Animal Shelter. In many cases, if your dog is wearing the license the dog can be returned home instead of having to come to the shelter. If your pet is lost anywhere in the world, the fastest way to be re-united with your dog is by this dog tag and the license. The fee is discounted for dogs impounded to the shelter that have a dog license but in many situations Delta Community Animal Shelter will attempt to reunite a dog with its owner should the dog be wearing his/her license.

What should I do if I lose my license?

A replacement tag is available for $5 at all license locations. Dogs are required to wear their tags at all times.

What happens if I don't purchase a license for my dog?
Animal Control Officers patrol Delta and enforce the Bylaw. If your dog is not licensed, the fine is $150.

Is there a smaller tag for small dogs?
Tags in 2012 are the smallest available and were order at this smaller size to accommodate small breed dogs.

Should I expect a warning the first time?
Generally, no, because if the Animal Control Officers were expected to give warnings the first time, some people would wait until they were warned to purchase a license. The onus is on the dog's owner to purchase a license.

Should I have my dog on a leash?
Yes, all dogs must be on a leash and under the control of a person who is competent to control the dog.

What is the fine if I am caught with my dog running off-leash?
The fine is issued by way of a ticket and is set at $100.

When a dog defecates, is the owner required to remove the feces?
Yes, the owner is required to promptly remove and dispose of the feces in a sanitary manner.
