Travelling Tails Program
Travelling Tails Program (TTP) is designed to help highly adoptable animals find forever homes. Many animals are waiting for homes because of factors not related to them. Shelters, including our own, can become overwhelmed with animals and therefore are unable to "show" animals appropriately due to a lack of space. This type of overcrowding makes successful adoptions difficult as it adds significant stress on the animals. In addition, "adoption markets" can play a big role in the turnover of specific breeds or temperaments. Such as in farm country, large dogs tend to be the desired pet, where in Delta, small dogs or dogs suitable for families tend to be adopted quicker than the large breed dogs.
So far, TTP has been directed toward "good dogs" that are in shelter locations where there is a certain type of adoption interest and/or the shelter is struggling to house the amount of dogs they have. The shelters approached are municipal run shelters that do not already have the ability to transfer animals out to other shelters (as the BCSPCA can) due to overcrowding or lack of exposure.
TTP has been organized to not take away homes, or funds, from current animals at the Delta Shelter, or cost the Delta tax payer more money. The dogs are assessed by DCAS's more experienced staff to ensure the dogs entering the program meet our "adoption market" and will not incur the shelter a large expense due to medical or behavioural needs and will thrive living in the municipality of Delta. Any dog taken into the program is done so with the understanding the dog can be returned to the original shelter if needed and therefore no financial risk is involved for Delta.
